Champ Island is a small island in the central part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, administratively assigned to the Primorsky District of the Arkhangelsk Region.
This place is famous for large spherical stones scattered along the coast of the island. The size of the stone spheres ranges from a few centimeters to 3 meters. The balls are composed of sandstone, but this does not help scientists explain their strange and at the same time geometrically correct shape.
Mysterious stones have caused a lot of controversy among geologists. Where did such objects come from on a deserted island where no traces of human presence were found? The logical theory of volcanic origin was named first, but after the first soil samples it was refuted.
According to one of the most common versions, melting glaciers formed natural pools, falling into which soft rocks were exposed to water flows, acquiring a perfectly round shape over time. But if such an explanation is suitable for small balls, then for 2-3 meter samples it looks very doubtful. Moreover, this is the only island in the archipelago where such an unusual geological phenomenon has occurred.

Someone sees in this an echo of a lost civilization, someone - a trace of aliens, and someone - a miracle of nature. Champ Island is a popular destination for Arctic cruises. Icebreakers specially stop for several hours at the island so that travelers can personally touch the mysterious "giant balls" and get an unforgettable experience.
