Our planet is fraught with many mysteries and on its surface there are huge "scars" and "wounds" that are of great interest to scientists and lovers of learning the secrets of the Earth. Near the small Yakut village of Batagay, there is a huge crater of an unusual shape, which was discovered several decades ago.

Interestingly, when geologists discovered the mysterious crater, they had no theory about its origin. But the locals try to avoid this place, considering it, by their superstitions, a bad place with negative energy and call the crater the gateway to hell.

Now the depth of the crater is about one hundred and twenty meters, but its depth is increasing by about twenty meters a year, and the length of the mysterious pit is already more than one and a half kilometers. All the same locals say that strange sounds are heard from the crater and are advised not to approach it, and scientists explain the origin of the sounds by the collapse of the ground due to constant expansion.

If supporters of the mystical origin of the crater advise to bypass this place, then for scientists it is of great interest. Such formations can tell about the past and future of our planet and understand the nature of such formations.

As you know, the age of the permafrost is more than two hundred thousand years and the formation of such a funnel can be associated precisely with the melting of the permafrost. At the moment, this is just a theory that has no evidence under it, but scientists continue to research "Batagayka" in order to find out exactly the causes of its occurrence.

According to scientific experts, similar craters began to form in other places of Yakutia, which may testify in favor of the version of the melting of permafrost, but local residents prefer to associate such failures with mysticism.
