Right at the bottom of the Cenot Angelita in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, there is an incredible underground river. This extraordinarily beautiful natural phenomenon is due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide. Heavier than salt water settles on the bottom of the river, forming a separate layer and forming a full-fledged underwater river.

Cenote Angelita can reach depths of more than 100 meters, with different layers of alternating fresh and salt water. The colorful foliage and branches of nearby trees, which float right along the banks thanks to the density of the water, add to the beauty of the river.

Cenote is a term used to describe a freshwater cave, commonly used to identify karst valleys and the sinkhole phenomenon, widespread in other parts of the world, especially Central America. The ancient Maya people considered these places to be sacred temples and gates to the afterlife, using them to celebrate religious rites, including all kinds of sacrifices.

Visiting this cave is not an easy task. Cenote Angelita fills with clear water for the first 20 meters and then becomes more and more turbid. Diving in coenotes goes to a depth of 55 meters below the surface and is therefore considered accessible only to experienced divers.
