XXI Century. It would seem that with the help of modern scientific achievements, people are able to solve any secrets of natural phenomena occurring on our planet. But this is far from the case. We bring to your attention one of these riddles.

Death Valley

In the southwestern United States, in the territories of California and Nevada, there is a US national reserve - Death Valley.

This is one of the most beautiful and amazing places on earth, as it is considered the hottest on the planet. According to statistics, in July 1913, a temperature of 57 ° C in the shade was recorded here.

The very name of the park conjures up a picture of everything that is the most severe and terrible - it is a barren, deserted, lifeless place of the Old Testament savagery. But in its eastern part, there is a place that is also considered the most mysterious in the Valley. Here is the Devil's Hole.

A hole is a hole in the earth's crust, which got its name from the Indians who once lived in these parts. According to Indian beliefs, it was believed that this is a passage between our world and the other world, that if you go down you can see unknown species of fish and mysterious creatures. Legends say that it is through this hole that the master of the underworld comes to the earth to accomplish his most black deeds. In no case should you spend the night in the Hole area - the sleeping devil will smell a living soul, rise up and take it away.

However, the Indian horror stories did not make much impression on the whites, and already at the beginning of the 20th century, the first attempt was made to study the Hole. But practically all that the researchers were able to find out then was superficial descriptive data at the place of research, and that below, in the crevice, there is a lake filled with groundwater.

What the devil is there?

More attention was drawn to the Hole when confirmed data began to arrive about a sharp deterioration in the well-being of persons in the immediate vicinity of the failure. In the course of a more modern study, it was found that the cave was formed about five hundred thousand years ago, and the cause of the negative impact was not an evil demon at all, but methane emissions from a reservoir located inside the mine.

However, experts were unable to explain where the methane came from and, most importantly, why the leaks are not uniform, but emissions without any regularity. According to a scientist from the Denver Institute, John Rockstone, to answer these questions, you first need to figure out what exactly is at the depth, to understand what processes are taking place there.

But as it turned out, it is extremely difficult for even modern researchers to penetrate the secrets of the depths of the underground lake.

Bottomless lake

In 1999, an attempt was made to measure the depth, but a metal cable got into one of the crevices and got stuck. The scientists lowered another cable, but again to no avail. After that, rumors spread that some animal lived at the bottom of the reservoir, which interferes with research.

In the same 1999, a controlled TV camera equipped with powerful searchlights was lowered into the reservoir. It turned out that at about eighty meters depth, the walls of the underwater well expanded. And after another hundred meters they could not be seen at all. At a depth of 220 meters, the searchlights turned off, so further shooting was carried out in complete darkness.

After walking 230 meters, the camera began to spin and swing. It looked like she was caught in a whirlpool. When they began to lift it, a bluish glow appeared from below.

Involuntarily, here you will begin to believe in the Indian legends about an evil spirit and that the Hole really reaches the very bottom of hell.

In this regard, an interesting opinion was expressed by John Maglens, an employee of the American Geographical Society. According to him, this is a huge hole in the ground and it is so deep that at the moment earthly computing devices cannot figure out the real depth of this place. The depth of the Kola superdeep well (12262 meters) is much less in comparison with it.

Nobody can give a definite answer yet.

Gatekeeper

The water temperature in the underground lake is about 33 degrees Celsius. But this water is not at all the same with which we are used to dealing in everyday life. There is such a concept in modern science as "heavy water". At first glance, it is no different from the usual one, only it does not consist of oxygen and hydrogen, but of oxygen and deuterium, a hydrogen isotope.

It can also be called dead water. An animal that drinks heavy water dies very soon, and biologists reasonably believe that life is impossible in its environment. Nevertheless, there is life in this poisonous environment! Anyway, in the upper layer of water.

Meet. Karpozubik, which is, as it were, a gatekeeper guarding the entrance to this "kingdom of death." Small fish, outwardly unremarkable. Its average length is 19 millimeters. But the character of the toothfish is heroic, and the adaptability is simply amazing. For 60 thousand years, it resisted first the ice age, then the high temperatures of the desert, and then the destruction of the habitat, arranged by man. But the two-legged, most likely, will finish off the "opportunist". The kartozubika is called the rarest fish in the world. It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most endangered fish species. This is understandable, if in 2005 there were 84 of them, then by 2013 there were already only 38.

In order to save the endangered species, attempts have been made to populate other water bodies with similar habitat conditions with the kartozubik, but all attempts ended in failure.

So it is possible that in the very near future the water in the lake will really become dead, lifeless and the owner of the Hole will have to look for other gatekeepers.

Singing rocks

The hole is surrounded by rocks that have their own "voice". For many, this sound inspires superstitious horror, because from time to time for no reason they make ringing sounds in a fairly wide range of volume and timbre. Visitors to the Devil's Hole experience uncontrollable fear, even if there is complete silence. This fear arises in people who do not even know the legends about this place. The strangeness lies in the fact that this is the only place on Earth where such phenomena occur. Mysterious mountain spurs of red-brown color, completely devoid of vegetation, are called by local residents "Rock Garden" or "Devil's Ring". In the area of ominous rocks, no animals are found, even birds do not dare to fly over their peaks. Scientists who honestly tried to solve the riddle of Mother Nature also became interested in this phenomenon. But they never came to the right opinion. The researchers studied the internal and external structure of the rocks, their size and shape, but they did not reveal anything there. “Musical abilities”, they believe, are equally possessed in this devilish place by both individual small cobblestones and huge blocks of indefinite shape, even weighing up to several tons. Scientists have tested the experimental assumption that only dense fine-grained homogeneous rocks such as quartzite, rhyolite or basalt ring. It is from such rocks that those rocks are composed, but this opinion, unfortunately, was not confirmed. And so far no one has put forward any other versions. The researchers could not explain the origin of the bright reddish-brown color on the tops of the "ringing rocks", which are in sharp contrast to the neighboring, ordinary mountains. They seem to consist of the very same lithological material. "Musical" mountains differ in color from the neighboring ones. Regardless of the height and shape of the building, all Singing Rocks emit the same sounds, reminiscent of a bell ringing. However, unlike the church, it brings only confusion and horror into the soul of a person. From time to time, mysterious sounds appear out of nowhere. They gradually intensify, begin to irritate and affect the psyche. Then silence reigns over the rocks again. Scientists have not yet been able to figure out the cause of the mountain chime. Various versions have been put forward related to the geological structure of the rocks, but they have not found experimental confirmation. The generation of sounds is also independent of the direction of the wind over the mountains. In the 90s, a group of researchers led by Ivan Sanderson discovered that the Singing Rocks were pierced by many narrow holes, about 10 centimeters wide, going deep into the thickness of the mountain range. Spectral analysis showed that this network of holes formed several million years later than the mountains themselves. Some scientists are inclined to the hypothesis of artificial origin of holes in the rocks. But what terrestrial or extraterrestrial civilization needed to arrange a "ventilation system" in the mountain monolith? This question also remains unanswered so far.

Summarizing

Considering all of the above facts, it is not surprising that the Devil's Hole attracts the attention of many scientific researchers and further study of the Singing Rocks and the Devil's Hole does not stop for a minute. And it is very possible that soon mankind will receive the necessary knowledge to shed light on such a mysterious place on our planet.
