The share of counterfeit food in Russia averages about 20%, he said. Most often counterfeits are found among dairy and meat products. Taking into account the decline in household incomes, the growth of inflation, as well as the increase in VAT from the new year, the demand for cheap products will increase even more, experts are convinced. And this will open the floodgates for even more fake goods. Moreover, opinion polls show that people are ready to be deceived, since high-quality food costs 30-50% more, and many Russian families simply do not have money for it.
“We have different figures for a number of products. If we take on average, then we have up to 20% of examples of counterfeit (food). This is all confirmed by protocols and studies,”said the head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Sergey Dankvert to RNS on the sidelines of the International Dairy Forum.
This data is in line with a survey of consumer preferences released in mid-November by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. It follows from this that most often Russians buy illegal goods of light industry (23%), food (21%) and pharmaceuticals (10%). At the same time, 42% of citizens of different ages and income levels buy counterfeit products only because of their low prices.
Earlier, the press service of the Rosselkhoznadzor reported that since the beginning of 2018, it has identified 16% of counterfeit products among the tested products. In total, the service has examined about 23 thousand food samples since the beginning of the year.
People are now ready to buy the cheapest products first of all, regardless of whether it is fake or not.
According to Anna Vovk, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, among food products, counterfeits are most often found among dairy and meat products. “In milk, the actual milk and cream are replaced with vegetable fats, most often with palm oil, and in sausages and sausages, beef and pork are replaced with cheaper offal: processed bones, leather, and at best, poultry meat,” the expert says. - Manufacturers are releasing counterfeit products on the market, because it can be very problematic to identify them: it is impossible to constantly take samples of the entire assortment presented in all stores. And it is almost impossible for a consumer to distinguish a fake from natural milk by eye."
According to Russian law, it is allowed to produce goods according to its own "original" recipe, using cheap ingredients, says Gaidar Hasanov, an expert at the International Financial Center. “Such products may be absolutely not useful and to some extent harmful to humans, but there are no violations from the law. In this regard, in modern markets, goods are sold even with gross violations of technical standards. About 12% of butter, about 78% of cheese, as well as 80% of cooked-smoked sausages can be considered counterfeit,”the expert notes. In his opinion, given the decline in income and the high debt burden of citizens, the demand for cheap products will increase even more.

“Given the declining purchasing power of the population, manufacturers are tempted to add cheaper components to dairy products. Small manufacturers, for example, use various additives and antibiotics. The cost of veterinary support, full-fledged feeding of livestock for farmers and small producers is also a costly affair,”said Sergey Lysakov, head of the Analytical Information Center of TeleTrade Group.
By the way, 86% of Russians agree to buy fakes, since they already do not have money for original brands, it follows from the results of a survey by the law firm BrandMonitor. Consumers understand that they are taking fake products, but they have no choice, because otherwise they will be left without food at all: they do not have enough money for real products.
Earlier, Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said that in various industries counterfeit products occupy from 20% to 50% of the market. According to the deputy head of the department, Viktor Yevtukhov, people prefer a fake only because its cost is much lower than a high-quality and original product.
“People are not ready to afford goods that are clearly of better quality, but at the same time are 30-50% more expensive. Although it would be more useful to eat less, but to use a product of natural composition, nutritious and saturated with the substances the body needs,”said Pyotr Pushkarev, chief analyst of TeleTrade Group.
According to experts, the cleansing of the Russian food market from mass counterfeits depends not only and not so much on the control and prohibitive actions of the authorities, but on whether people's real incomes will finally start to grow significantly: then consumers themselves will start choosing more expensive and high-quality food..

However, I am convinced of one thing: it is impossible to promise an increase in the average life expectancy of Russians from 64 to 80 years without ensuring the protection of the population from food counterfeiting! The efforts of medicine will never be able to cover the harm that fake food does to the health of Russians!
