A brownie, also called a home owner, is a common inhabitant of any home. In Slavic mythology, he is described as a kind of spirit that does not have a body, horns or wings. The brownie differs from other spirits in that it cannot directly harm a person. Also, the brownie is not afraid of the cross and can live with equal ease both in the house of a believer and in the house of an atheist.

It is believed that the brownie can be offended if he is considered an evil spirits. Formally, however, he refers to her. When Lucifer was expelled from Heaven, his companions, who repented of their deeds, received partial forgiveness. These include the brownies, who have the opportunity to gain complete forgiveness and return to Heaven. But for this, the brownie must live with one owner for seventy years and serve him faithfully. Therefore, the cross can neither scare nor drive away the brownie.

The brownie loves horses. If there is a stable in the house, he tries to live closer to the horses. If the horse is attracted by the brownie, he will start looking after it, braiding its tail and mane. Such a horse will always feel good, will be in good condition and health. If the horse turns out to be unpleasant to the brownie, he will scoff at her, and she can get sick and die for no obvious reason. The attitude of a brownie to a horse largely depends on its color. The same goes for the color of the cats.

Since the brownie must serve the owner for a long time, he has the intention to get as close to people as possible. The brownie not only looks after the horses, he does some housework. Very often people hear sounds in their houses at night, as if someone is cleaning, washing dishes or doing something else from household chores, but no one was in the kitchen or in the room.

Previously, people believed that there must be a brownie in the house, when they built a new house or moved, they always called a brownie. In the event that mutual understanding is established between the owners and the brownie, he will guard the house and yard, warn people about possible troubles.

The brownie is respected, they try not to offend, they do not pronounce his name just like that, but in conversations they speak of him as the owner, grandfather, they call him “himself” or “the biggest one”.

The most cruel way to lure a brownie was considered the best way. It was necessary to bring a black rooster into the house and deprive him of his head, and then pour his blood on the floor. Another way: at midnight, appear on the street, holding your left shoe on a rope, which should be pulled along with you and never look back. When the rope is taut and the boot becomes heavy, it will mean that the brownie has accepted the invitation to come into the house.
