At the mention of the word "Chupacabra" most people now imagine something mostly hairless and dog-like. It was these images that were at one time very often mentioned in the Western media, when any dog or coyote suffering from scabies was mistaken for a chupacabra.
It should be noted, however, that the current publicized images of the chupacabra are very different from the original chupacabras that appeared in Puerto Rico in the mid-1990s.
And one of the most striking details about her appearance was the wings, often mentioned by eyewitnesses.
One of the residents of Puerto Rico named Minka (Norka), met Chupacabra in mid-1975, twenty years before the word "Chupacabra" became widely known throughout the world.

The closer it got, the more the woman could see. The body of the creature was dark brown in color, with two large wings folded and pressed tightly against its back. On the hands were clawed fingers, and the hands themselves were thin and bony. The mouth was wide open and two large fangs protruded from the mouth. The most frightening were the eyes of the creature: It stared attentively at the woman and they were blazing like red hot coals.
Fortunately, the creature did not attack the person, but crossed the road and perished in the twilight.
Another resident of Puerto Rico named Rosa said in 2004 that she saw a frightening creature thirteen years ago in the city of San Juan (capital of Puerto Rico). She was spending Friday night with her best friend and they were having a lot of fun, and when it got completely dark, they went home.
For some reason, they chose not a short road to their village, but a winding path in the middle of the forest. When they walked along it it was already one in the morning and they managed to walk about fifteen minutes before they noticed a strange animal on the same path. Even in the dark, the women realized that this was definitely not a creature familiar to these places.
It was just over a meter high and gray in color. It moved along the path with an unusual gait, and behind its stooped back, wings were clearly visible. And they were not pinned to the back, but dragged along the ground. There was one more thing: the animal had a pair of burning red eyes. It stopped on the road, cast a gaze at the women, but then continued on its way and disappeared.
The following story about the sighting of a frightening winged creature comes from 2005. A man passed in the month of February late at night by the building of an old church and then heard a deafening roar that filled the air. The roar came from the trees near the church.
Suddenly, something winged and very large flew out of the trees and rose into the sky. It was not a bat or a large bird. It was almost the size of a human and the eyewitness froze with fear, watching it flap its wings and fly away.
You might say, “What does the Chupacabra have to do with it? Maybe it's something else? However, many reports of Puerto Rican Chupacabras, who were caught near the livestock they killed, contained information about the presence of strange formations on their backs. Someone called them thorns like a porcupine, someone “comb”, someone “horns”.
Could it be wings that were simply poorly viewed in the dark? Quite. Could these chupacabras walk around Puerto Rico without attacking livestock? Naturally. If we combine one with the other, then a lot in the "huge bats" seen by people indicate precisely the chupacabras.
