Jericho is one of the oldest and most important ancient cities of all time and a sacred site on earth. In ancient times, it was known as the City of the Giants, because it was inhabited by giants called the Gibborim.

The Gibborim are the heroes mentioned in Genesis 6. They were not as tall and powerful as the Nephilim, but they still represented a dangerous race of warriors. According to the Bible, those who descended to Earth and associated with earthly women were "fallen angels" (observers), a group of 200 high-ranking divine beings.

The giants mentioned in Genesis are the result of interbreeding between humans and fallen angels. The Nephilim were born not only among themselves, but also created offspring with homo sapiens. Their offspring were the giants known as the Gibborim.

Joshua, who became the leader of the Israelite tribes after the death of Moses, mentions giants in his chronicles. The phrase "mighty men" is a reference to the Gibborim, deriving from the same Hebrew word that Moses used in Genesis 6.4 to refer to giants.

According to some ancient sources, part of the Gibborim survived and retreated to Africa. Several biblical stories also tell of Rephaim, another group of giants, characterized as "the mighty tall men who lived in Canaan."

Another source, Procopius of Caesarea (500 - 554 AD), a famous late ancient scholar from Palestine, also wrote that the giants fled for their lives to Africa. They reached the Pillar of Hercules, two headlands in the eastern part of the Strait of Gibraltar.
