Few people know that this bridge is a lift, it was opened to traffic in 1957. The author of the project is the architect K. Yakovlev. The bridge is beautiful, it is pleasant to look at it. The piles of the supports are sunk to a depth of 26 meters, the abutments are faced with Ukrainian granite, the cast-iron railings are decorated with national ornaments. Its total length is 503 meters. Initially, a part of the bridge near the right bank was made lifting (for the passage of large ships, but this was no longer necessary after the construction of the Riga HPP).
According to the recollections of one engineer, a participant in the construction of the bridge, a special niche was made in the second pillar on the right in order to place explosives and blow up the crossing if necessary. Today this niche is closed with an iron hatch and welded.
This is not the first drawbridge in the city. The old railway bridge (1914-1944) was also lifting, it had 10 supports (8 in the channel and two on the coast). For the passage of ships, the right extreme truss of the bridge was raised, for which two electric motors were used.

Somewhere in the year 98-99, I heard Poles came and started digging there. About five years ago I saw how something was measured in this place with equipment. Who was looking for what they found or did not find - I do not know, they did not report to me.
