A resident of Poland, who is called only by the name of Joanna in the media, has become the second patient in the country to undergo a face transplant after neurofibromatosis. It is a rare genetic disorder that causes the growth of benign tumors.

Due to illness, the woman was unable to chew, swallow and talk normally. Doctors performed an operation that lasted 23 hours and required replacing 80% of the skin on the face.

Three years after the unique face transplant, the woman appeared at a press conference. Today, her appearance is striking if you compare the current Joanna with the one that was three years ago. With the exception of well-visible scars on her neck and forehead, a woman is practically no different from her other peers. This proves that facial reconstructive plastic surgery has made incredible strides in recent years.

The first face transplant was performed in Poland on a man whose face was disfigured after an accident with a stone processing machine. It is currently still continuing to recover.

The 27-hour surgery was performed just weeks after the accident. As a rule, such a transplant is prepared for several months or even years. For the man, the surgeons reconstructed the jaws, palate and eyeballs.

Joanna does not exclude that in the future she will go through new plastic surgeries that will relieve her of conspicuous scars and make her look completely normal.
