Stanislav Vasilievich Kurilov, a scientist-oceanographer, on December 13, 1974, fled from the Soviet Union right in his flippers. What could lead to the fact that the scientist decided to flee his country, and even in this form?
Kurilov did not make such a decision spontaneously. The reason for the escape was the constant refusal to travel abroad. For a scientist of this specialty, not being able to travel the world was an ordeal. So you can understand Kurilov.
He managed to get on a cruise liner that went from Vladivostok to the equator and back. The ship did not enter foreign ports, so the restricted to travel citizen was released on such a tour. No one could have imagined that a man in despair would jump overboard. By the way, the ship from which Kurilov escaped was called "Soviet Union".
… Stanislav went to the main deck, threw the body overboard, pushed off with all his might and … flew down! He had to swim almost 100 kilometers in the ocean to the island of Siargao, where he first came to the Philippine authorities, and then was deported to Canada. There he received citizenship.
Stanislav spent almost three days in the water. An ordinary, unprepared person would hardly have managed to get to land, but Kurilov had been an excellent swimmer since childhood. He was even a boy at 10 years old, somehow swam across the Irtysh! In addition, yoga classes, which developed such endurance of the body, helped.
Ironically, the water that changed Kurilov's life took her away. On January 29, 1998, Kurilov died while diving at Lake Tiberias (Israel). Together with his partner, Stanislav freed the equipment entangled in fishing nets. Suddenly Kurilov's friend got confused in the nets. Stanislav managed to unravel it, but got confused himself. They could not save the scientist. When he was raised to the surface, he only had time to wave his hand.
