Seven archaeologists, led by historian Emerson Baker from Salem State University in the United States, have identified the exact place of execution of the so-called "Salem witches." The study of scientists is reported on the CBS News website.
Using archival materials, aerial photography and sonar, scientists have established that the execution took place in the Proctor Ledge area, which was previously an overgrown section of forest, and is now surrounded by two residential streets and a pharmacy.
In the 19th century, the historian Sidney Purley pointed to the same site after researching archival documents, but no one listened to him: the locals believed that the execution was carried out at the top of the so-called Hangman Hill.
The local administration plans to install a special sign in the area of the execution of the "Salem witches", notifying about the tragedy. Also, the authorities do not exclude the creation of a memorial museum.
The execution of the Salem Witches is one of the tragic moments in US history. In 1692, 19 people were hanged on charges of witchcraft in Salem (as scientists established, not on the gallows, but on trees), and one was crushed by stones.
