In all major religious communities, the belief in demonic possession is deeply ingrained. In every religious denomination, whole systems of rituals and ceremonies are devoted to this phenomenon. Catholics have a whole commission dealing with this problem. Moreover, not every priest can and has the right to conduct rituals to drive out an unclean spirit from a person.
Modern science completely rejects the phenomenon of obsession. Although there are cases in history that defy explanation.
It is believed that a demon possesses a spiritually weak person. For example, in the Middle Ages, delirium tremens was considered a temporary obsession. When a person drank for a long time and indulged in sin, his body and spirit weakened and it was easy for the demon to take possession of such a person. Obsession with an unclean spirit is divided into two types. The first is when the personality of the demon and the person exist together. Such people sometimes speak in other people's voices, and often in other languages. And the second, when the demon does not manifest itself, but the person dramatically changes his character and behavior. Begins to drink, take drugs, or commit a crime.
Priests advise reading special prayers that scare away evil spirits, fasting and abstinence are very helpful. Disputes between doctors and priests do not subside. It is interesting that Orthodox priests believe that it is easiest for a demon to take possession of the soul of an ordinary uneducated person. But if a person has received a good education and is sufficiently erudite, then the demon tries to bypass.
