The Catholic Church's reaction to divorce has always been extremely negative. And, nevertheless, even from this seemingly unshakable rule there were also exceptions when the church made concessions and allowed the marriage to be dissolved. But there had to be very good reasons for this. One of these is a nasal disease known as ozena, or fetid coryza.

This in all respects an unpleasant disease appears when epithelial tissues are destroyed, as well as the bony walls of the internal sinuses of the nose. These incredible pathologies are accompanied by the secretion of a secret, which soon dries up, forming fetid crusts.

Moreover, the smell emanating from the sick is so strong that everyone who is near the patient can hear it very clearly. At the same time, the patient himself does not feel it, since his olfactory region is also atrophied.

Of course, the patient, even if he does not feel the smell emanating from him, well sees the hostile reaction of people to his appearance, so he tries to appear in public places as little as possible. And, as a consequence of this lifestyle, his psyche gradually changes, a difficult, depressed state appears.

Fetid rhinitis is a disease that has been well known since ancient times and in almost all countries. True, there are still places on the globe where this disease has never been recorded. For example, the Australian and African continents.

However, paradoxically, those blacks who moved from the African continent to Brazil or, say, to Central America, Ozena "bypasses". By the way, the local Negro population is not sick with it either. On the other hand, there are places in the world where the lake is recorded more often than the average statistical value: for example, in Europe it is Spain and Greece, and in Asia - China and Japan.

Sexual preferences are also characteristic of this disease. For example, it is known that women are most often affected by ozena. Moreover, the disease usually manifests itself in young years and stretches for a lifetime. And only during pregnancy and feeding of the child, as well as in old age, its symptoms noticeably weaken.

However, despite the fact that they have known about the lake for a long time, which was already mentioned above, the reasons provoking its appearance still remain unclear, although there are several hypotheses on this score.

For example, according to one of them, ozena appears mainly in people with well-developed nasal passages. And, most likely, this is due to the fact that the air circulating through the nasal canals "dries up" the epithelium and ultimately leads to its degeneration.

True, this hypothesis does not include the fact that Africans with their wide noses do not have the disease, while the Spaniards with narrow noses have widespread disease.

The authors of another hypothesis tried to link the appearance of the ozena with some unknown infectious disease. This version was spawned by a case when a fetid rhinitis was "caught" by the washerwomen, who were washing the linen of winter patients. At some point, doctors even tried to isolate the causative agent of this disease. But in the course of numerous experiments, it has been firmly proven that ozena is not an infectious disease.

In total, to date, about a dozen hypotheses have been proposed, the authors of which are trying to find mechanisms by which one can explain the emergence of the ozen. It is assumed that ozena is provoked by inflammatory and avitaminosis processes, disruptions in the endocrine background of the body, as well as other changes in the biochemical and physiological processes of organ systems and tissue structures. Whether this is correct or not, many pathologists and physiologists currently believe that they provoke disturbances in the nutritional function of the nasal cavity, as well as disruptions in its nervous regulation.

Well, since there is no clear theory, there are no effective means of getting rid of this ailment. Therefore, even in our time, when treating ozena, they mainly remove the crusts and eliminate the fetid odor. This is achieved by refreshing the nasal conchas with moisture with medicinal preparations, softening and removing crusts …

With another disease from a person from early childhood, he constantly smells of … stale fish. Moreover, even the most modern hygiene products do not help get rid of this smell.

At the heart of this, in fact, an exotic form of the disease, when an unpleasant lot smell comes from a person, there are clear genetic bases. By the way, scientists have established not only this fact, but also discovered a change in the gene, as a result of which the assembly of one of the liver enzymes, called by scientists FMO-3, stops.

In a healthy body, this enzyme breaks down the gaseous substance trimethylamine, which has the smell of fish brine.

If it happens that a child receives one “diseased” gene from both parents, he, in fact, becomes a carrier of the herring “aroma”: trimethylamine that has not undergone cleavage reactions will release all pores on the skin surface.

As in the case of Ozena, at all times the disease turned such people into lonely and unhappy social outcasts. But now, since geneticists have found the key to unraveling this disease, its treatment is not beyond the threshold.

In 2014, foreign singer Cassie Graves said that she suffers from this disease, which is why she constantly smells of rotten fish. Trimethylaminuria was discovered in the future performer when she was only three years old. Cassie Graves noted that her life could be much better if not for the "stinking" disease.

She said: “Do you know the smell of stale fish that you smell when you come to the market for food? This is how I smell every day. The smell comes from my skin and hair. I can wash at least three times a day, but it doesn't help."

Despite the fact that there are several ways to deal with a rare ailment, none of them guarantee a complete recovery. However, the popular performer is not discouraged. Cassie Graves plans to give lectures about her ailment so that people can learn more about it and, possibly, change their attitude towards sick people who smell bad.

In 1996, in one of the issues of the most popular English magazine The Lancet, it was told about a 29-year-old young man who suddenly began to complain that his finger, which he had pricked with a chicken bone five years ago, began to emit an unpleasant odor.

And although famous British doctors were involved in this problem, the cause of the stench was never found. The assumption that an unknown infection was to blame was rejected, since it was not possible to isolate bacteria or viruses that cause a strange disease from the patient's body. Modern antibiotics also did not help the patient. And while doctors were looking for a remedy for a strange disease, the disease suddenly disappeared by itself.
