More and more secrets of antiquity are being discovered by enthusiastic researchers. This also applies to the fact of the presence of mysterious labyrinths, entwining with their tunnels all of Europe from Turkey to Scotland. For example, there are more than 1200 in Austria and Germany alone. There is also an inexplicable coincidence: the European tunnels have clear parallels with the routes of Scottish and Irish monks who traveled in the 6th century as missionaries across the continent.

The famous German archaeologist Heinrich Kusch, who spent a lot of time on expeditions studying underground labyrinths, claims that these tunnels already existed near the Neolithic settlements of people, on almost all continents. He is sure that the fact that the tunnels have been preserved for 12 thousand years is due to their huge original dimensions. Among the large passages of underground labyrinths, there are those that are slightly wider than ordinary wormholes. Many of the "bottlenecks" in the maze have indentations that look more like rooms or storage rooms. By the way, not all labyrinths have an exit to the surface of the earth, but, in any case, they are part of a massive underground network of passages (partly - climbs).

According to the researchers, during the construction of the tunnels, spiral design was used, during the design of which a preliminary drawing is applied on the surface of the earth. There are four types of underground labyrinths: round-spiral, horseshoe-shaped, kidney-shaped and concentric-circular. In the center of any horseshoe-shaped labyrinth there is always a stone pyramid. Over the centuries, these labyrinths were called - girlish dances, the roads of giants, Babylon, the games of St. Peter, etc.

Many legends and assumptions are associated with the desire of people to discover the secrets of these underground structures. What versions were not expressed: labyrinths were a place where a person could hide from animals, or they were some kind of roads for safe travel, or they were protection from violence, wars and climatic disasters. It is possible that there could be held criminals or terminally ill who needed to be isolated from society. However, no one was able to confirm these hypotheses.

There is one more branch of assumptions - mythical. So, according to the opinion of esotericists, gnomes, druids, koboldakhs, fairies, etc. could live in these underground structures. Surprisingly, this version received some confirmation. So, not far from the city of Lindau near Lake Constance, a mysterious ancient sand tablet was found, which depicts a goblin with a tail (it should be borne in mind that ancient people often drew what they actually saw).

We also managed to decipher the ancient scriptures that tell that these labyrinths are the path to the underworld. You can open the doors there only if you know special spells and, most importantly, pronounce it at the right time. It is believed that only a brave person is able to get through the labyrinths to the land of "eternal youth", where the gods used to live.

Another interesting fact: in the European labyrinths, it was never possible to find any tools, or the remains of people or animals, no burials - there is only untouched pebble, black mounds of stone, boxes-dolmens and boulders placed on the edge. It seems that all the labyrinths were created by nature without human participation or with the help of some higher powers. When accepting this version, there is no way to explain the strange coincidence of the directions of the tunnels with the routes of the missionary monks.

Another strange coincidence is that ancient Cretan coins were found, which depict a diagram of underground labyrinths.

By the way, the very word "labyrinth" has ancient Greek roots and came to us from the myth of the Minotaur. For a long time, no one visited the Cretan labyrinths. But the first excavations in the underground showed the presence of a huge palace with hundreds of rooms. They immediately suggested that perhaps this is the home of the legendary Minotaur. Interestingly, the double helix found on the coins of Crete exactly matches the pattern of the labyrinths depicted on the northern cliffs. Until now, the labyrinths depicted in these figures have not been found. Perhaps this is not a spiral of labyrinths, but a kind of letter to descendants - now it is difficult to assert anything, because the search continues.

The first Russian northern underground labyrinths were described by the archaeologist Vinogradov during his imprisonment on the Solovetsky Islands. He sketched all the underground tunnels found, as well as all the tombs and stones he saw. Russian researchers had a hypothesis that the labyrinths served as sanctuaries, or they are huge altars left by an unknown ancient people, whose priests could communicate with the other world. It was believed that the soul of the dead, walking in a spiral, is lost in labyrinths and does not return: this road led the souls of the dead to the Otherworld.

This theory was confirmed by the remains of a person and a small piece of quartz found in the Russian northern tunnels. The archaeologist considered that the heaps of stones in the labyrinth are nothing more than ancient burials. Now one could consider the riddle of the labyrinths solved, but one should not rush to conclusions: after all, there were no such finds in European tunnels. This means that it remains unknown: why did people in ancient times need many kilometers of tunnels in different parts of the continent?

A very interesting version appeared due to the fact that in Europe labyrinths were called "Babylon". The eternal city of Babylon was mentioned in the Bible. How are these names related? Why did the peoples of Northern Europe believe that the keepers of the labyrinths are fairies who own the secret of eternal life? It is very likely that these facts are closely related.

From Celtic mythology, it is known about the existence of the city of fairies - Avalon. Only a select few can open the gates of this city. One of the guesses is that it was this city of fairies that gave the name to the underground labyrinths - "Babylon". The word "Avalon" in translation sounds like "apple". But it is in the Celtic legends that much is said about the existence of rejuvenating apples. The shape of the underground labyrinths is very similar to the cut of an apple. If we accept this version, then all these moments give hope nevertheless to unravel the secret of the underground labyrinths.

Scientists dated the appearance of all labyrinths to the 2nd millennium. But not a single rock drawing of ancient people, in which they described their lives in sufficient detail, contains images or even a hint of underground labyrinths. Perhaps they did not know about them, or was there a ban on their images?

There is another incredible assumption - maybe these underground labyrinths are some kind of "communication channels" of the Universe?

Questions, questions - only so far there are no convincing answers to them. This means that the researchers will continue their work and we may be waiting for incredible discoveries.
