In 1904, American gold digger J. S. Brown discovered an artificial tunnel in the mountains of California. The passage was long enough to lead Brown into an underground cave whose walls were lined with sheets of copper.
On the huge copper sheets, inscriptions in an unknown language were clearly visible, which the gold digger could not read. The place he opened was marked by two oddities. The walls of the cave hid a gold-bearing vein, the boundaries of which were clearly visible in places not covered with copper sheets.
A terrible detail of the cave were dozens of decayed skeletons of people who apparently discovered a strange find before Brown and for some reason remained forever in this incomprehensible world. Nothing hindered Brown himself, and he calmly climbed to the surface, marking the gold-bearing corridor for him alone with the well-known signs.
A sober and practical gold digger understood that initial capital was needed to develop a deposit, and considerable, therefore he set himself the goal of earning a certain amount before starting to exploit a gold mine.
It took thirty years before he could, at his own expense, hire a brigade of mining workers, purchase some equipment and pay for a mining license. In 1934, along with reliable and experienced workers, Brown arrived in the town of Stockton, closest to the cave, and took up preliminary organizational matters, while continuing to keep the location of the cave secret.
In the morning work was to begin, and the day before the gold digger left the hotel where he was renting a room and disappeared forever. The town police were unable to find any trace of him. They tried to explain the disappearance by the debts that Brown could have made, counting on future income, but a check of papers and accounts showed that all preliminary expenses were paid by him from his own funds.
Only the hypothesis of the elimination of a person who knew the discovery of unknown inscriptions that was not intended for publication remained real. Given the fact that different people disappeared under similar circumstances throughout the 20th century, the explanation can be considered plausible.
