A 35-year-old Oklahoma resident who wished to remain anonymous claims she saw a giant bird in the Hot Springs County area, the species of which she could not identify.
The woman was driving north along Buffalo Creek Road to Thermopolis, Wyoming. Suddenly, a dark bird of prey rose from the roadway.
“I was amazed at her large size and predatory appearance,” the woman said. - She flapped her wings and soared 40 meters. Then she sat on a rock sideways to me, about 300 meters away from me, and I had enough time to examine her with 8x binoculars. In the end, she flew east along the gorge and flew over the ridge."
The woman claims to have watched her for about 3 minutes and gave a detailed description of the unusual bird.
“The animal, in general, looked like an eagle. The head and body were covered with dark red, almost black feathers. The head and beak looked very intimidating. The head was dark brown in color with a bright orange or yellow long beak, deep set and sharply curved. The legs were very large and also bright orange. The tail and belly feathers were completely white."
“The wings were huge, with a span of over 2.5 meters. The impression was that the bird could fly at a very high altitude. When she took off in front of me, the left tip of her wing was within a meter of the center of the roadway."
The woman said that she is well versed in ornithology and is confident that it was “the largest flying bird” she has seen.
“The day before, I had seen a group of three hawks in the sky, but they seemed tiny compared to this bird. I was seriously taken aback when I saw her. I have never been able to determine what species it belongs to,”she said.
