The international historical community decided not to succumb to provocations

On June 3, the scientific director of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Alexander Chubaryan spoke about the first meeting of the International Commission for the Development of Objective Approaches to Assessing Historical Facts.

Scientists who gathered in Moscow and aimed at objectively reporting history, represented countries from India to the United States and back. There were, of course, Europeans, and, unexpectedly, even Ukrainians - Academician Tolochko represented his country. However, the surprises, moreover pleasant ones, did not end there.

“Everyone said that recently there have been a lot of historical speculations and amateurism,” Chubaryan said. “Therefore, it was decided to launch a joint scientific project“Memory of History”.

Thus, in fact, he stressed, "cooperation in the humanitarian direction has been resumed: at the meeting of the commission it was said that culture, science and education are above sanctions, and the scientific and educational community is ready to cooperate with Russia." Even in Tolochko's speech, Chubaryan clarified to MK, it was said that “history should not separate peoples,” and “falsification of facts is unacceptable.” And on the whole, “Ukrainian professional historians (unlike politicians) are not very involved in revising history,” he said.

The study of the history of Russia will be at the center of the work of the new international commission. First of all - such complex problems as: Russian revolutions of the XX century; Civil War; a look at the image of Russia from the outside from ancient times to the present day. Of particular interest is the study of prejudice in the West towards our country, which is supposed to be traced from the opuses of de Custine in the Middle Ages to his modern followers.

Of course, disagreements with foreign historians are inevitable. But if you look closely, there is no unanimity on many scientific problems among Russian scientists, Chubaryan made it clear: “Now we are making a new concept of teaching at the school of social studies. And the sharpest polemics are going on on all major issues!"

On the other hand, the international scientific community, which had gathered in Moscow the day before, was united in something else: “We must fight so that a distorted image of Russia does not arise,” a representative of a delegation of historians from Austria formulated the main idea.
