We know much less than we think about the reasons that push us to eat what we eat. And this mystery is not only about scientists. If we know a little more about this, we may be able to learn something about our (often so strange) attitude to food.
So far, the mythical version of the story doesn't look so bad. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were only gatherers, as they ate the fruits that fell from the trees. Cain the farmer and Abel the shepherd embodied two ways of development in the future: agriculture and civilization against cattle breeding and nomadism. Cain offered God the fruits and vegetables he had grown, and Abel sacrificed an animal, which, according to Josephus, symbolized milk.
Agriculture in its original form brought with it disease, deformity and death. Therefore, God abandoned him in favor of milk from Abel's flocks. Cain was seized by an insane rage, and he killed his brother. God sent Cain into exile instructing him to measure the ground with his steps, like the shepherd brother he killed. Ultimately, Cain and agriculture prevailed (people settled in cities that were given farm food), but only because they themselves became a little like Abel. And civilization continued to move on.
