The latest figures say that the magnetic North Pole has moved 200 km in 20 years and is now moving 5 times faster than a year ago.
Gradually, but disastrous
According to some experts in the study of the Earth's magnetic field, with the acceleration of the movement of the poles, it can simultaneously turn off over the entire territory of the planet, and then humanity will remain defenseless against cosmic threats. This is the opinion of the chief researcher of the Institute of Oceanologists of the Russian Academy of Sciences A. M. Gorodnitsky. There is an ionosphere above the atmosphere, reminds Alexander Moiseevich. It is in it with this magnetic anomaly that giant ozone holes arise. And along with the solar wind, the hard gamma of cosmic radiation also reaches the surface of the Earth, causing catastrophic damage to it.
However, another option is also possible. Recent studies by scientists have shown that if the rate of displacement of the magnetic poles remains the same, then the Earth's magnetic field will disappear gradually. In this case, humanity will face a long series of natural and man-made disasters. Natural disasters will happen more and more, and disasters will happen more often. And in this case, the death of humanity will not come from the solar wind, but from the gradual radioactive contamination of the planet.
Live and work at night
But some researchers believe that humanity will be able to adapt to this. According to Doctor of Technical Sciences V. D. Dudyshev, it is possible that people will have to work at night and sleep during the day: during the daytime, radioactive radiation is harsher. Valery Dmitrievich does not exclude the emergence of underground cities on Earth in this connection, and people in the proposed circumstances will work in spacesuits.
If this scenario comes true, then the Earth will become a dead planet flying in airless space (something like the plot of the movie "Letters of a Dead Man").
Pavel Toropov, Associate Professor of the Department of Climatology and Meteorology of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University, believes that the shift of magnetic belts is not the first time on Earth, this is not new. Another thing is that it is a novelty for human civilization to comprehend these processes.
Valery Petrov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation, Ph. D., the solar wind, which are important now, on the "ideological scale" - are insignificant: Petrov believes that gravity is sufficient, even if the magnetic field cannot protect earthlings due to the loss of the atmosphere. Petrov argues that it will take millions of years to spend all the hydrogen from the Earth's atmosphere.
