In San Francisco (California, USA), urban legends have been circulating for many years that local residents mysteriously disappear in huge numbers.
According to SFGate, these legends are not far from the truth. At the moment, the city police departments really have open cases about at least 988 local residents missing without a trace.
The oldest missing person file dates back to 1976, but most date back to the 2000s. According to Sergeant Andrea Creed, most often adult men disappear, followed by adult women (36%), followed by 23% of adolescents.
Now there is a peak of the missing in the city again. Previously, this was in the early 2000s, when people began to record the disappearance of people from temporary shelters for minors, centers for the treatment of drug addicts and rehabilitation centers.
However, Andrea Creed himself is sure that the official data are exaggerated.

However, according to Sergeant Michael Andreichik, the files of returnees are quickly removed from the system. Moreover, in search of the disappeared, the police regularly inspect hospitals and carefully check all unidentified patients who arrive.
A new detailed reporting system was introduced to the local police in 2016, and 4,930 people were immediately reported missing. Of these, 45% were women, 34% were minors, and 6% were pensioners.
Most often, urban legends blame cruel serial killers for missing people. The most famous person is the so-called "Zodiac", who killed men and women in California and San Francisco in the 60s, but was never caught.
There are also eerie stories about underground tunnels under the local Chinatown. Someone says that they were built during the time of the underground gaming industry, someone that the channel of drug dealers passed through them. One way or another, they say that something dangerous lives there and that it is better not to meddle there alone.
