Captain Loft, worried that the gauges were showing an extended forward landing gear, dispatched flight engineer Don Ripo to check the situation through a small window in the instrument compartment. The liner is put on autopilot - just someone turned it off. Busy with the instructions, Loft never noticed the Tristar's descent. The sound of the altimeter should have alerted Ripo, but he was still trying to see the chassis through a small window. The result was a terrible catastrophe: the liner crashed into a swamp and caught fire. Who turned off the autopilot remains a mystery.
