Tallinn is a beautiful old city dating back many hundreds of years; it could not escape the not-so-pleasant pages in its history. Its narrow streets and stone pavements keep many cruel secrets. The city is full of stories of ghosts and all kinds of unexplained phenomena and events.

Executed in the Town Hall Square

The Town Hall Square, which is the center of the Old Town, used to be a market square, and it was here that all significant events of city life took place. Criminals were also executed here.

One of them was a pastor who was outraged by the burnt scrambled eggs and killed a girl who worked in a tavern. Another was the ratman, who let his wife out about some important state secrets he had learned about at the magistrate. Ratman was first forced with his wife on his back to walk around the town hall on all fours, and then they cut off his head. The pastor was executed in the same way.

They say that sometimes their ghosts are seen in the square. It remains only unclear how it became known that the ratman had spilled secrets to his wife.

Old Town Towers

Promotional video:

The tallest tower in the Old City has the nickname Kiek in de Kök - "Look into the kitchen". She received it for the fact that, it was alleged, from her it was possible to see what one of the inhabitants of the city would have for dinner.

Another tower, called Neitsithorn - "Maiden", in the 14th century became a place of imprisonment for girls who did not want to marry those men whom their family chose for them. The girls were supposed to stay in the tower until they changed their minds and obeyed. However, there is another version of how the tower got its name. According to her, the tower was just a place of work and residence of seamstresses.

In 1980 a cafe-bar appeared in the tower. And almost immediately, they began to see the ghost of a man in medieval clothes in him. Sometimes they watched him disappear into the wall, the glasses began to move by themselves, footsteps and voices were heard. From all this, the cafe has become much more popular.

The other two towers are described as follows. In ancient times, two young people lived near Tallinn - Herman and Margarita. They often wandered around the city together, but before midnight they always left it. This was a kind of curse, the conditions of which they had to fulfill. Once they did not keep track of time. The city clock began striking midnight, and the lovers ran away. Alas, by the time the striking of the clock stopped, Herman and Margarita did not have time to leave the city. The curse fell on them, and Herman became a tower called "Long Herman", because the young man was tall and thin, and Margarita turned into the tower "Fat Margarita", because she was magnificent during her lifetime. The towers are located in different parts of the city, where Herman and Margarita, supposedly, were cursed.
