18-year-old Cambodian woman Suth Ret contracted an extremely dangerous infection called necrotizing fasciitis after a tooth extraction at the dentist.

In the West, this infection is called a flesh-eating bug, as disease-causing bacteria literally destroy the skin and subcutaneous tissue very quickly.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an infection caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes or Clostridium perfringens. The infection spreads rapidly along the fascial sheaths, veins, and lymphatic vessels. In the later stages, the disease is accompanied by intoxication, infectious-toxic shock and multiple organ failure often develop.

According to the girl, the procedure at the dentist was the most common, routine, she just had one tooth removed, and nothing said that she could be infected. But soon the girl's condition deteriorated sharply and ulcers appeared on the right side of her face.

The infection quickly spread through the bloodstream, stripping the girl of half of her face. In addition, she also lost a lot of weight. When Sut Rit was taken to the hospital, she weighed only 38 kg.

At the moment, doctors are fighting for the girl's life. while trying to stop the spread of the infection.

Julia Khuri, who came to Cambodia from Canada, who lived in the same village as the sick girl, reported to the world agencies about the state of Sut Rit. She asked for help for her treatment.

- After I saw her, I realized that I could help her. She is fully aware of what is happening to her, she just does not know to what extent her face is destroyed. I cannot imagine the level of pain and suffering she goes through. Three months ago she was 100% healthy, at most she just sneezed, and now she has no face.

Necrotizing fasciitis is most often caused by group A streptococcus. Most often, this bacterium causes a small local infection that resolves in a few days. But in exceptional cases, it can lead to necrotizing fasciitis. At the same time, the skin tissues, subcutaneous fat, muscles, blood vessels are quickly affected. Progressive infection can lead to large disfiguring wounds to the body, loss of limbs, and even death.
