In the old days the island was called "Suzhok" ("Waterless"), and according to legend, it got its current name from fishermen - those who left for the shores rich in fish often did not return back. Most likely, this is due to the storm waves, which the small fishing boats could not withstand, but there are also assumptions about a huge number of poisonous insects and snakes.

Years instead of minutes
In the 60s of the last century, a group of scientists visited the island. On the way into the interior of the island, the sky was covered with fog, radio communications were cut off, and within an hour everything was dispersed. Having contacted the remaining colleagues, the scientists learned that at this "hour" a day had passed.
By the way, they talked about the time that throws out breathtaking somersaults here even in the days of the past, which became fairy tales. In the Aral Sea version of the popular fairy tale about Koblandy-Batyr, the hero sails to an enchanted island, where he sleeps for three days and three nights. And upon returning home, it turns out that he was gone for 33 years.
Minus is a tanker, plus is one riddle
Intrigued by many anomalous phenomena, the military delivered a tank to the island, literally stuffed with many devices. The tankman was ordered to constantly speak on the air, and was sent into a mysterious fog. The radio broadcast did not stop, the tankman spoke constantly and suddenly he disappeared. The driver replied to the orders to return simply and clearly: "Why go back?"
The tank was returned. It was covered with a layer of frost, and there was no tanker inside - neither alive nor dead. Only his costume remained. This mystery has not been solved to this day.

There are people who consider themselves initiated into the secrets of the island and, as they claim, can see the future on it and predict events. So, a certain Abdrazak, who called himself one of the followers of Barsakelmes, in September 1960 saw an event that would take place only in April 1961 - the flight of the first man into space. He could hardly describe his visions, because then only a limited number of people throughout the USSR had the concept of astronautics.
Most of the stories about the wonders of the island are unconfirmed, many of those who returned from the island were sent to homes for the mentally ill - their stories looked very unlikely. Or maybe the secret of the island needs to be hidden: who knows how many hunters would go to travel in time.
