Archaeologists have found an ancient cemetery with remains.
During excavations at Krestovozdvizhenskaya square, archaeologists discovered a lime fragment of the Exaltation of the Cross Church of the 18th century, and a part of the city cemetery nearby.
In the part where security archaeological work is being carried out, about 30 wooden coffins, also dating from the 18th century, were discovered.
The peculiarity of the coffins is that they are made of two parts of a solid oak log, carved inside - in the form of decks.
Outwardly, it seems that the coffins, both adults and children, are piled up in a heap, however, as experts say, in the 18th century it was considered normal to bury the dead in the graves of relatives.
The large number of children's coffins in the cemetery is explained by the fact that three centuries ago, infant mortality was very high: about a third of those born died at a young age.
At the moment, archaeologists are clearing the coffins from the layer of the earth. The degree of preservation is different for everyone, those that are able to withstand transportation will be sent for anthropological examination along with the remains. The rest will be transferred to the church.

They will be reburied according to the Orthodox rite.
Part of the cemetery will remain hidden under a five-meter layer of earth. Only those remains will be reburied that are located at the site of the upcoming construction work. Archaeologists will not open the entire cemetery - such a task is not worth it.
Remains of limestone masonry - this is the partially preserved foundation of the temple.
