The photos released by NASA appear to justify the conspiracy theory that an ancient civilization existed under the Antarctic ice sheet.

The vast ice continent is believed to have once been home to the lost city of the state of Atlantis over 12,000 years ago, when much of Antarctica was ice-free.

A photo released earlier this year by NASA appears to support these claims, as do images taken by NASA's Operation IceBridge mission, which internet detectives say show a "lost underground city."

Google Earth images also show a pyramid sticking out of the ice, which some experts believe is further evidence of an ancient city.

According to the Daily Star, Professor Charles Hapgood, a history expert from the United States, first published an article in the 1950s, where he wrote that movements in the earth's crust meant that only 11,600 years ago, most of Antarctica was completely free of ice.

The 500-year-old map of Piri Reis, a world map drawn by the Ottoman admiral of the same name, is evidence of this, he said.

Several scientists who have studied the map say it clearly shows that the west coast of Africa, the east coast of South America, and the north coast of Antarctica are not covered by a shield of ice.

Air Force Lt. Col. Harold Ohlmeyer sent a letter in 1960 to Professor Hapgood stating that his theory of the Piri Reis chart was correct.

He wrote: "The geographic details shown in detail at the bottom of the map are consistent with the remarkable results obtained by the Swedish-British Antarctic Expedition in 1949, which studied the seismic profile of the upper part of the ice cap."

“This indicates that the coastline was mapped before it was covered in ice. This part of Antarctica [was] free of ice."

"The ice cover in this area is now about a mile."

Conspiracy theorists now think Hapgood was right, and he discovered that much of the south pole was ice-free - as well as the location of the lost city of the Atlanteans.

The existence of this mythical country was first mentioned in the writings of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato in 360 BC.

Atlantis, as described by Plato, was founded by the human race, half gods and half humans, around 9000 BC.

If she really existed, it would be at the same time that shifts were taking place in the earth's crust, according to Professor Hapgood.

And just a month ago, further evidence of Atlantis in Antarctica emerged in the form of images that appear to have captured huge pyramids sticking out of the ice.

Striking photographs show structures that bear an uncanny resemblance to the pyramids of Giza, which were built thousands of years ago by the ancient Egyptians.

Could all of this mean that one of the world's biggest mysteries might be unraveled?
