For the first time, members of a naval fishing expedition drew attention to the disappearance of the Mexican island of Bermeya back in 1997, when they did not manage to find it, but until 2009, this issue did not bother anyone. According to the maps of the 17th century, the 80 square kilometers island was supposed to be located 55 nautical miles from the Yucatan Peninsula, thus being the most remote territory of Mexico from the mainland.
The Mexican government realized the full scale of the loss only 12 years after the loss was reported, when the country needed to confirm its claims to part of the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico. It was then that the specialists were instructed to find the lost island by all means. But even with the help of the latest expensive equipment, the staff of the National Autonomous University of Mexico could not find any traces of the island of Bermeya and scientists were forced to recognize it as non-existent. This exodus cost Mexico 55 nautical miles (102 km) of fat, oil-bearing coastal zone.
