Three years have passed. In January 1939, 15-year-old Maria Talarico and her sister walked across the bridge. They stopped, leaned on the railing and began to look down. Suddenly Maria groaned, knelt down, then fell and fainted. People passing by stopped a carriage passing over the bridge and brought the girl home. A few hours later, Mary regained consciousness, but her awakening did not bring joy to her parents.
In a man's voice, the girl declared that she was Giuseppe Veraldi and demanded that her mother be brought to her immediately, to whom he (she?) Should inform the important news. The story by "Giuseppe Veraldi"
Señora Veraldi sat for several hours at the bedside of her "son". "Giuseppe" recalled his childhood, told details from the life of the Veraldi family. The mother was crying. "The resurrected Pepe" said that he was really killed by friends with whom he drank that evening in a bar, and called their names.
“Giuseppe” asked to take him to the place of death, showed him the place where “friends” beat him and from where they threw him down from the bridge. Then he went downstairs, lay down in the place of his "death", took a pose in which they found the body of the unfortunate man, and lost consciousness.
The unfortunate girl was taken home, where she came to herself already in the guise of Maria Talarico, not remembering anything that happened to her. The chunk of life between two faints was completely erased from her memory.
Doubts in pursuit
Already in this form, the story looks more than amazing, although readers will surely have questions: how reliable was the story of "Giuseppe Veraldi"? Wasn't all this a skillful staging to cast a shadow on the innocent friends of the deceased, to settle scores with them for some insult?
The police officers also reasoned approximately. They categorically refused to open a case based on the stories of Caterina Veraldi, Dr. Giovanni Scambia and the parents of Maria Talarico. ("Senora Veraldi! I understand your grief, but what should I write to my superiors? That the spirit of Giuseppe Veraldi, who died three years ago, descended to Earth and reported new facts that give grounds for a re-investigation of his death?")
This could have ended the story, but it had a continuation.
Letter from Argentina
Another nine years passed, and one day Senora Veraldi received a letter. A certain Luigi Marchete confessed that with the help of three of his friends he really killed her son. It all happened because of the woman. The letter listed the names of all the killers.
These were the same people who were blamed for their death by the spirit of Giuseppe Veraldi!
On the basis of a written confession, a criminal case was reopened. Two of those arrested confessed to the crime, the third had already died by that time, and Luigi Marchete himself lived in Argentina, which did not extradite the criminals to Italy.
It only remains to add that Maria had never known the Veraldi family before and could not know the truth about the death of Giuseppe.
