In the latest issue of the American Geophysical Union's online journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, a report was published by a group of Italian geologists claiming that they have finally found something very similar to a fragment of the famous Tunguska meteorite.
The Italian team, led by Luca Gasperini and Giuseppe Longo from the University of Bologna, has been working in the area for several years. It was they who several years ago scientifically substantiated the hypothesis according to which the taiga Lake Cheko, located 8 km northwest of the supposed epicenter of the explosion, is a meteorite crater. Now, having examined the bottom of this cone-shaped lake using seismic and magnetic scanning, they found in the center a large stone fragment, which, according to their assumption, is a fragment of the Tunguska meteorite. The "anomaly" they discovered is at a depth of ten meters under the deepest point of Lake Cheko.
The Tunguska meteorite, more precisely, the "Tunguska event", which literally shook the world on June 30, 1908, still remains an unsolved mystery. The explosion, which then thundered over the Podkamennaya Tunguska, was estimated at 40-50 megatons. He burned more than two thousand square kilometers of taiga, the seismic wave caused by him circled the globe twice, white nights were established over Europe and Britain.
Ufologists talk about malicious aliens, but scientists cannot agree on what it was - an icy comet or a massive asteroid. It was only possible to find out that the explosion occurred at an altitude of 10 km, but so far, despite many years of searching, no one has found fragments of the fallen space object.
Now one of them seems to have been found. It remains only to get it.
