A laser available to the US Navy is capable of producing two- and three-dimensional plasma images that outside observers may mistake for unidentified flying objects (UFOs), Forbes writes, citing a corresponding US patent.
According to the magazine, the Navy's technology is designed to trick the infrared sensors of self-guided missiles. In particular, a laser is placed in the tail section of an aircraft, and a corresponding plasma target is created at virtually any distance from the aircraft.
Popular Mechanics was skeptical about this explanation of the nature of UFOs. The publication is confident that only some of the disclosed incidents involving unidentified flying objects can be explained by the use of lasers. In particular, according to Popular Mechanics, these plasma images are seen by the AN / ASQ-228 Advanced Targeting Forward-Looking Infrared (ATFLIR) camera of the F / A-18E / F Super Hornet.
