Those who read weather reports or vacationed in the Tsemesskaya Bay area, not to mention local residents, know that bora is considered the hallmark of the weather features of the southern sea city of Novorossiysk. The northeastern wind arises from the opposition of a powerful and extensive anticyclone, located over the European territory of Russia, and an active Mediterranean cyclone. In addition, the relief significantly affects the strengthening of the storm wind. Bora in Russia is also typical for Gelendzhik, the shores of Lake Baikal (near the Olkhonskiye Vorota Strait), and the Chukchi city of Pevek. One more area has been added to the list recently. More precisely, there was a wind up to this moment, but now the public is presented with its official confirmation.

In February, a group of expert biologists worked on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, including an employee of the Russian Arctic National Park, Deputy Director for Science Ivan Mizin. Scientists appeared in the archipelago due to the invasion of polar bears, the purpose of the expedition was to study their behavior and the reasons for their mass appearance. Experts had to assess the factors that attract polar bears to human habitation and draw conclusions.

Working in polar conditions, especially during the winter time, is often fraught with many difficulties. One of them is an incredibly strong and sudden runoff wind, according to the official website of the park. Novaya Zemlya bora is a gusty wind, the speed of which can reach 60 m / s. A rare phenomenon is usually observed in the cold season when two baric formations are opposed. Bora occurs when air passes over mountain ranges. The phenomenon is characterized not only by an increase in wind speed, but also by a sharp change in air temperature and a drop in pressure on the leeward side.

On Novaya Zemlya, bora can lead to both a decrease in temperature with a northeasterly wind from Taimyr, and an increase in temperature if the wind blows from the southeast. Despite the fact that the phenomenon is local in nature, it affects the water circulation in the Arctic basin. This is due to an increase in the heat loss of the sea through its surface in the vicinity of the western coast of Novaya Zemlya.

So, on the satellite images received from the Sentenel-1 apparatus, the Novaya Zemlya pine forest is depicted on January 14, 2019. In the space photograph, experts determined the presence of bora by the waves it caused in the Barents Sea.
