Kiana Smith from Trinidad Island (Caribbean) was born with a large purple spot on her neck and lower face.

In childhood, a mole was only a spot on the skin, but with age it began to thicken and become thicker and thicker.

By the age of 30, Kiana's birthmark had turned into a terrible lumpy growth that disfigured the woman and due to which some people gave her offensive nicknames like "purple eater" or "nightmare".

The woman realized that something urgently needed to be done when a swollen mole began to interfere with her chewing food and caused vision problems in one eye. Kiana has already undergone several surgeries, and is now undergoing laser therapy, as the mole will obviously not stop growing.

Such huge moles like Kiana's are often called "port wine stains" in medicine, as they have the color of port wine. Scientifically, they are called "naevus flameus". This is a congenital vascular lesion on the skin, often flat, but often after puberty, it begins to grow and thicken.

Port wine stains can occur anywhere, but about two-thirds are on the head or neck.

Doctors in Trinidad could not help the woman and then she went to New York (USA). There she began treatment with the plastic surgeon and specialist in vascular anomalies, Dr Milton Waner. Over the next years, Kiana underwent several operations, during which the doctor removed the overgrown tissue of the mole, and then laser correction.

Kiana Smith is now 40 years old and still attends laser therapy regularly. She will probably have to do this for the rest of her life, otherwise the mole will start growing again.

Recently, a woman flew to New York again for a laser procedure after feeling a growing tightness under her chin.
