According to Irish lore, the banshee is a supernatural creature that looks like a crying woman. This creature hunts some old Irish lineages (even outside Ireland) and whose chilling cry heralds the imminent death of a family member or her close friends.
The most dramatic banshee episode dates back to November 22, 1963. Then the Boston businessman James O'Barry, a descendant of an Irish family that moved to America in 1848, heard that just after noon, a banshee had begun to shout in fright. O'Barry later learned that his friend, President John F. Kennedy, had died.
Disembodied cry
The Welsh version of the banshee is the disembodied cry known as the sai-hirez, or the sound of death, which haunts some old Welsh families. It has just been recorded in the Taiwi Valley. Another audible herald of fate is the drum that once belonged to Sir Francis Drake.
It is kept in Buckland Abbey Abbey, which was once the home of Drake and, as they say, suddenly begins to drum on its own at fateful moments for the nation. So it was during the delivery of the German flotilla in Scapa Flow. In the Orkney Islands in 1918 and during the evacuation from Dunkirk in June 1940.
Perhaps the most astonishing sound phenomenon recorded in Britain was Jeff, the talking mongoose, who in the 1930s terrorized the Irving family in the secluded Duer-lish Cashi farm on the west coast of the Isle of Man.

Although many of those who visited the farm heard Jeff, only the Irving, in their own words, saw him. Some scholars regard the mongoose as a poltergeist, but others have concluded that the Irving's daughter, Voyry, was a saintly ventriloquist.
