Present-day Chernihiv is a miniature town in which most of the buildings are high-rise buildings. However, the view of the city changes dramatically as soon as you enter its old part.
They call her "Val". It is in that place that the understanding comes that the history of this city began more than a thousand years ago. And there for years old mystical stories live and are passed on from generation to generation. Chernihiv can boast of many such stories, but the most interesting of them is a tale about the treasure of Hetman Mazepa. The evidence base in favor of this story is the following fact: Mazepa and Motrya Kochubei actually lived in this municipality at the same time.
As the legend says, the goddaughter of Ivan Mazepa, whose name was Motrei (Maria) Kochubei, went crazy with love for her age relative. However, listening to all church traditions, Mazepa could not marry a girl, especially since Motrei's parents did not allow it. But the girl's bright feeling was so strong that she secretly left her father's house and entered into a sinful relationship with the hetman. Naturally, the girl's mother could hardly bear the shame that fell on her, and twice cursed her daughter.
As follows from the stories of the locals, Hetman Mazepa himself, at the same time, hid barrels of gold and jewelry in the area of the building where the army office was located. Naturally, he told his beloved about his secret. And since, damned by relatives, the soul of Maria Kochubey still cannot find rest - people now and then encounter a ghost in the area of this building, which the locals call "Mazepa's house."
The girl appears in front of people in the form of a translucent silhouette. She is dressed in a white shirt to the floor, and black thick hair smoothly down her shoulders. The barefoot figure of Kochubei's daughter is seen by the townspeople when they go around the territory of Val. This happens only once a year - on the night before the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Witnesses of the mystical anomaly report that the ghost of the girl asks passers-by to baptize her, since this very gesture will help calm the soul and allow the martyr to go into eternal sleep. In exchange for the expected help, Motrya must show the person who baptized her the exact place with Mazepa's treasure.
But, unfortunately, the mother's curse was so powerful that people with panic fear shy away from the ghost, never understanding what he needed. In view of this, every year, at the moment of the third crow of the rooster, the silhouette of a girl with a groan: "Cross!" - disappears into the air, and a year later reappears to make a round of her possessions and see if the treasure is in place.
