In the Indian city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu state, a rare Cuban crocodile died. The founder of the zoo believes that he was ruined by loud music, writes India Today.
The reptile lived at the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust Zoo, 43 kilometers from Chennai. The aviary with Cuban crocodiles was located 15 meters from the Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort & Spa. In the evenings, music was played outside the zoo for guests. After one of these parties, a 12-year-old female Cuban crocodile was found dead.
According to him, such precedents are known. There is no other explanation: the reptile was healthy and well fed.
Whitaker complained about music coming from the hotel in February. He claimed that her loudness exceeded the legal level. Of particular concern were the powerful woofers installed in the immediate vicinity of the enclosures.
Whitaker told The New Indian Express that crocodile behavior changed after the hotel opened. They became anxious and fought often, leading to injuries. In addition, there were no birds left in the zoo due to the noise. In the past, thousands of egrets flew there every year.
After the death of the Cuban crocodile, the hotel management met with Whitaker and promised to take measures to prevent this from happening again.
Cuban crocodiles are found only on some of the islands of Cuba. They differ from other crocodiles by their bright color and long, muscular legs. As a rule, representatives of this species grow up to 2.3 meters in length and weigh about 40 kilograms. According to various estimates, there are from three to six thousand individuals left in the world.
In 2013, it was reported that the Swedish authorities in Gothenburg had ordered the administration of a local nightclub to take care of the health of the aquarium fish living in the institution. Experts have come to the conclusion that loud music has a negative effect on the cichlids kept in the club.
