Algae are the inhabitants of the World Ocean, very necessary for all life on Earth, although they are somewhat unpleasant in appearance. Their long, dark green slippery "bodies" floating and swaying in the waters do not evoke much sympathy. But, as you know, there are exceptions to any rule …

We are talking about one representative of algae, which can be safely called the most beautiful among all the algae on Earth. We are talking about moss balls - bright green spherical formations that adorn the bottom of some earthly bodies of water with their presence.

Until recently, filamentous green algae that form into balls could be found only in two places - at the bottom of the Japanese Lake Mivant and its Icelandic "relative" - Akan.

However, more recently, the same balloons were recorded in Australia, on one of the Sydney beaches. The correct name for this algae is Aegagropila linnaei in Latin. The balls grow to a size of 12 to 30 centimeters, depending on the climate where they were found. The appearance of moss balls in Australia was the first fact of their existence in the southern hemisphere of the Earth. The peculiarity of this type of algae is that they do not grow from the bottom or floating objects, globular algae grow in all directions from the center of the ball.
