In the 60s of the last century, the sailors on our submarines, who received more advanced sonar equipment, met with incomprehensible phenomena. In some areas of the oceans, acoustics recorded unusual signals, like a frog croaking. But what kind of frogs can there be in the ocean? The signals were then called "Quakers".
Those who heard the "croak" had a clear impression: the "something" sending these signals was acting quite consciously. It seemed that the source of the signals, changing the tone and frequency of the sound, moved around the submarine. However, the radars were unable to detect any significant object, although the sailors had a complete feeling that it was very close and freely crossing the submarine's course. The captain, when he was informed of an emergency, of course, did not feel very confident, because in the sea everything incomprehensible is fraught with danger.
Here is the story of the former commander of a diesel submarine of the Northern Fleet: “We are entering the Norwegian Sea, and suddenly an acoustician hears that certain objects surround us under water, and they are acting very energetically: they are actively maneuvering vertically and horizontally, emitting mysterious sounds that we cannot classify … Sometimes it seems that an unknown enemy is attacking us, then retreats without consequences. In the end, the commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral G. M. Egorov ordered the creation of a special freelance group under the leadership of the chief of staff of the fleet. The group began to study the strange signals. One of the participants in this work - A. G. Smolovsky later recalled: “The secrecy was terrible, and even we, the members of the group, tried by hook or by crook to keep us out of the logbooks. However, the moment has come when the "Quakers", together with NGOs (unidentified underwater objects), have seriously disturbed our naval command. Then, by the decision of the Minister of Defense Marshal A. A. Grechko, under the intelligence department of the Navy, a special group of several officers was created.

“I started to study the history of the Quakers more than 10 years ago,” writes Vlad Vilenov. - I talked a lot with the commanders of submarines, with those who listened to these mysterious "quacks", found long-retired officers from the special group of the naval intelligence department, specialists from the naval research institute dealing with problems of acoustics, scientists of the Institute of Oceanology. I will say right away that I have not heard a consensus on this issue. Opinions were very different, but all agreed on one thing: "Quakers" - an objective reality, and this is a conscious impact on our underwater objects with a specific purpose."

Unknown signals continue to haunt sailors and scientists around the world. Low-frequency sounds, similar to the echoes of some kind of technology, are caught on long waves that spread over huge distances. The pulses are detected by sensors located in different parts of the globe. If the signals are recorded on a tape recorder and scrolled at an increased speed, they can be perceived by the human ear. These sounds are of different types, reminiscent of not only croaking. Researchers even gave them special names: "train", "whistle", "braking", "howl". “Take braking,” says Christopher Fox, a leading expert in ocean acoustic signals. “This sound, similar to that of an airplane landing, was first heard in 1997 in the Pacific Ocean. Now the "braking" has moved to the Atlantic. The source is located far from the hydrophones, and we cannot detect it."
Frequency modulated and as if transmitted by intelligent beings, a signal called "upward" sounded constantly in the ocean from 1991 to 1994. Then he suddenly disappeared. A few years later, it reappeared, noticeably strengthened and became more diverse. It has not yet been possible to pinpoint the sources of these signals, so scientists still have a lot of exciting work to do.
