Before the first meeting with the healer, in a maddening panic, I wanted to drink, but I limited myself to chewing betel nut - Philippine gum made from areca nut. Understandably, without any anesthesia, tools and minimal disinfection. He begins to deftly wield his thin and long fingers, like those of a pianist. Having made some sort of cutting gesture, he puts his hands to my stomach, and blood appears around his fingers - the assistant instantly wipes it off with a cotton swab. Then the healer's fingers plunge into my flesh - and draw out clots of a very unpleasant bloody mass from there. Then Cristiano explained to me that this is what my illness looks like.
