Archaeologists in the Indian state of Mizoram recently discovered the remains of an ancient city that may belong to a lost civilization.

Since November 2015, near the city of Wangchiya, located in the Champha region, excavations are underway that can shed light not only on the secrets of the city that once existed here, but also study previously unknown facts about the Mizoram civilization and the entire northeast of India.

“We found under a thick cover of vegetation and foliage traces of a lost city, and maybe even a lost civilization. It's amazing to stumble upon so many things. It will take us a lot of study time to make final conclusions,”said archaeologist Sujit Nayan.

The archaeological team has already discovered a lot of interesting and useful information. They found over 50 buildings and 9 terraces. The walls of the buildings depict people, animals and flowers. The terraces are made of large stones from 3 to 7 meters high. After examining eight of the nine terraces, scientists concluded that they were most likely burial sites. Pools were also found, the same as in the Taj Mahal.

For a more detailed study and determination of the age of the ancient city, scientists are going to conduct radiocarbon analysis, which may become the key to the secrets of the ancient civilization.

Mizoram is located in the northeastern part of India. It borders Myanmar in the east and south, Bangladesh in the west, and Tripur, Assam and Manipur in the north. It is a hilly area with dense forests, which is called the "Land of the Highlanders". Modern Mizoram is the most sparsely populated state in India. The discovery of the lost city in Mizoram can help to collect very important information about the people who lived in the area, about their life, culture, and the reasons that made them leave this city. This information will become a significant contribution not only to the history of Mizoram, but to the whole of India.
