Scientists from the Russian Federation carried out a large-scale analysis of the remains of ancient people and found a clear correlation between the peculiarities of the climate in which the ancestors of modern people lived and the structure of their facial bones. A study on the relationship between climate and facial features appeared in the Journal of Human Evolution, and the RIA Novosti news agency writes briefly about the findings of scientists.
Specialists from the Anuchin Research Institute and Museum of Anthropology at Moscow State University, as well as employees of the anthropological department of the Biological Faculty of Moscow State University and the Vavilov Institute of General Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, analyzed numerous skulls of ancient inhabitants of Siberia, northeastern regions of Asia, Northern Europe, and other regions.
“The correlations we found are typical for both Northern Europe and Northern Asia - climatic features, as it turned out, directly affect the structure of the facial skeleton,” the study authors say.
According to scientists, residents of cold regions have a number of common facial features. These are, in particular, the increased size of the upper jaw, narrowed, but at the same time, elongated nasal cavity, as well as the nose, the width of which is higher than the standard.
These are just some of the features of the facial morphology of the ancient inhabitants of the northern regions of Asia and Europe.
