The water in the Quiet Pine River turns red
Quiet Pine is a right tributary of the Don. The other day, just below the border with the Belgorod region, near the village of Alekseevka, the water in the river suddenly turned red.
“The day before yesterday, we were informed about this by the residents of Ostrogozhsk,” says Lyudmila DUBOVSKAYA, deputy head of Rosprirodnadzor for the Voronezh region. - Oddly enough, this happens every year. In the spring, as soon as it gets warmer, the water in the river turns red. So far, no one has been able to explain this phenomenon. Upstream, up to the Belgorod region, there are no sources of wastewater discharge, because of which the water could be colored. Therefore, we asked our Belgorod colleagues to take water for analysis from themselves.
Now Belgorod specialists are engaged in the analysis of water for the content of chemical or biological contaminants.
It is unlikely that the river has changed color due to the dumping of industrial waste. There is no mass death of fish in Quiet Pine.
- Most likely, the water was colored due to algae or the simplest microorganisms, which began to multiply rapidly due to favorable weather conditions, - Lyudmila Dubovskaya said in conclusion. - And if this is so, then after a week the red color will gradually disappear.

As it turned out, the accident at the dam of the Golikovsky quarry in the Lipetsk region is to blame. The accident was eliminated in a few hours, but five thousand cubic meters of a mixture of lime and clay got into the Don. Experts have found only one way out of this situation - to wait for the river to self-purify. And the territorial department of Rosprirodnadzor imposed a fine of 100 thousand rubles on the culprits.
