In the Abyisky region, Yakutia (Russia), the perfectly preserved head of an extinct ancient wolf that lived about 40 thousand years ago was removed from the permafrost.

The sensationalism of the find is added by the fact that this is the first in history the remains of such an ancient animal with a fully preserved brain.

The head looks like the wolf has died quite recently. His bared fangs give the impression that a few hours ago he was growling furiously at someone.

The head was found back in 2018, luck smiled at the local resident Pavel Efimov as he walked along the banks of the Tirekhtyakh River, a tributary of the Indigirka. The wolf was between 2 and 4 years old when he died and it was a large animal with thick reddish hair, similar to that of a mammoth.

Researchers from Japan working in the Sakha Republic have dated the head to 40,000 years or even older.

The length of the wolf's head is 40 cm, which can be compared with individual large specimens of modern wolves, although the ancient wolf was apparently a little larger in general.
