According to experts, the remains belong to the herbivorous dinosaur sauropod, who lived 70 million years ago.

A group of Japanese and Mongolian scientists during a joint study in the Gobi Desert discovered the skeleton of a large dinosaur. Jiji news agency reported.

According to experts, the bones found with a high degree of probability belong to a sauropod, and their age reaches 70 million years. These herbivorous dinosaurs lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods on all continents. Their length could exceed 20 m, and their mass ranged from 15 to 30 tons. They easily survived in dry climates and other extreme conditions.

Among the bones found, the main ones are the hip and caudal parts of the skeleton, including the large femur, 1.55 m long. Scientists note that this is one of the largest specimens found in this region during excavation of a soil layer corresponding to the Late Cretaceous period.

During the expedition, they were able to find the fossilized footprint of a bipedal herbivorous dinosaur belonging to the order of ornithopods. Its dimensions are 86 by 115 cm, which is close to record figures in the entire history of excavations. At the same time, the dinosaur itself was probably a fairly large representative of its order and reached a length of 17 m - 5 m more than the famous carnivorous tyrannosaurus.

Earlier this year, a research team from Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido unveiled the skeleton of a hadrosaurid dinosaur that they claim is the most complete in the country. In total, it consists of 157 bones.
