The Koumung River flows in New South Wales, Australia west of Sydney.

In 1989, a resident of Sydney Gary Jones talked about how he met a humanoid hairy creature next to this river.

In Australia, all such creatures are called the word "Yovi" and are considered an analogue of the North American Bigfoot or Yeti. But researchers actually know very little about Yovi and to a large extent the stories about him come from the legends of local aborigines.

Therefore, the story of Gary Jones turned out to be one of the best accounts of the encounter with this creature.

Gary was then 15 or 16 years old and he and two friends that day went to rest in Kanangara Boyd National Park. Reporters learned about this incident in 2003 when Gary gave an in-depth interview.

“The three of us often go fishing on the Koumung River, there are delicious trout. We also like this place because there are very few people there, because it is not so easy to get there, it will take six hours by mountain bike with stops for rest.

Due to the low population there are many uninhibited wild animals, the bushes are teeming with kangaroos, wombats, and a little upstream you can even meet platypuses. Having set off early in the morning, we arrived at the place at about 2 pm and then went fishing for about an hour. Then we decided to run and started collecting firewood for the fire.

We were walking along the river bank and then one of the friends said to me “Look, what is it there?” And pointed to the opposite bank of the river. There, about thirty meters from us, stood something tall and humanoid, but instead of clothes, his whole body was covered with hair. I once saw a very hairy man on the beach, but it was much hairier.

I barely managed to say, "It seems to be a man," and then we came a little closer to examine him. The creature stood with its back to us and in a rather strange position. One of his legs was on the rocky shore, and the other was in the water, and he stood so wide apart that he would have sat down on a split a little more.

The shore in that place was steep, and the water depth was more than a meter. This creature leaned strongly towards the water and began to draw water into a wide palm and drink. The noisy water drowned out everything around and we could only observe this creature and did not hear whether it made any sounds of its own.

When we got even closer and there was only fourteen meters of water between us, the creature suddenly straightened up and turned to face us. It stood very straight and looked at us point-blank. It was almost two meters tall, its legs were straight and long. I myself am very well-fed and weigh somewhere around 100-112 kg, and so he weighed a little more in appearance than mine, but at the same time did not seem fat, since he had well-developed muscles.

He seemed to me like American football players, as he had very straight, broad shoulders and a short neck. At the same time, his arms did not seem to me particularly long, that is, they were not like monkeys, but like people.

Hair covered his entire body and was dark brown in color. Approximately this color will be in a black dog, whose coat will burn out strongly under the sun. On his head, a beard and long hair stood out strongly, while they were very tangled and caused in me a feeling of disgust, like from a slovenly dirty person. Also, the hair on his head was formed into some tight knots, something like dreadlocks.

The hair on the rest of the body was much shorter and denser. When at the end this creature wandered away from us, I noticed that it had bare soles of feet, dirty, but without hair. Moreover, even his buttocks were covered with hair.

The eye sockets on the face were deep and I had never seen anything like it before. It wasn't a human face, but it didn't look like a monkey's face either. The forehead was very large and twice as long as my forehead. The top of the head seemed to me elongated and narrowed.

The eyes were very dark as were the lips. When he looked at us, his face showed no emotion. He did not growl, did not frown, did not grin, did not make faces. However, he did not show any fear of us. Then he just turned and walked away from us.

When he reached a line of very thorny bushes, where an ordinary person would never have climbed, he did not even slow down, but simply pushed through them and disappeared into the depths of the thickets.

When he left, we instinctively wanted to follow him, but the river stopped us. There was a very strong current, and when we finally got to the other side, he had already disappeared.

But we immediately felt a very strong unpleasant smell there, it was the smell of ammonia (urine). Then we went in the direction where he had gone and for some time heard him puffing and noisily moving in the thickets.

By that time it was already getting dark and we realized that it was time for us to leave, although in spite of everything we really wanted to make our way into the forest after him. On the way back, we found several torn tufts of his hair on the bushes. We could have captured them, but none of us thought to do so. To be honest, all three of us then decided that this was just a feral aborigine. We also saw large footprints in the sand on the shore.

Later we came to this place several more times, but no longer met him. And note, we never called him Yovi or Yeti, only a savage or a wild man. We do not know who it was. We've heard legends about Yovi, of course, but was it really Yovi?"
