The fight against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria is ongoing, and more and more generations of antibacterial drugs are invented. As a rule, the bacterial infection can be defeated, but sometimes there are times when the bacteria prevail. Although recently in the US state of Nevada, an exceptional and sad case occurred. A bacterium appeared that was resistant to absolutely all known antibiotics, which was the cause of death.
A woman in her 70s was admitted to a hospital with a bacterial infection, and her condition continued to deteriorate despite the fact that doctors tried 26 different antibiotics. According to experts, shortly before the onset of symptoms, she returned to the United States from India, where she also ended up in the hospital many times. At home, the victim was immediately taken to the intensive care unit.
After a week in the hospital, doctors noted that all the antibiotics at their disposal have no effect on the bacteria. Subsequently, experts from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control, Centers for Disease Control) stated that none of the antibacterial drugs available in the pharmaceutical industry is effective against the identified bacteria. According to one of the treating physicians, Dr. Alexander Kallen, “I think this is cause for great concern. We have relied on the release of more and more antibiotics for so long. But it’s clear that bacteria often become drug resistant much faster than we respond with new drugs. The sample submitted to the CDC contained the New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase enzyme. It is he who is the cause of the most powerful antibiotic resistance. We fear an outbreak of infection in this region."
