By 1760, Owen Parfitt was in his sixties and suffered from many ailments and could not walk due to paralysis. He lived with his fellow elderly sister on Commercial Road in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

On that warm summer evening, Owen Parfitt wanted to sit outside and warm old bones in the sun. Due to paralysis, he constantly sat in his chair and needed the help of his sister and neighbor if he wanted to move to another place. His sister and neighbor dragged him out onto the wide porch and left him there.
There was a field across the street from Owen's house where several workers worked and if Owen started screaming, they would immediately hear him and see any person who approached his house.

Later, the wind blew harder and clouds began to gather, and then Owen's sister went out onto the porch to take her brother home. But she found only an empty chair in which his coat remained. In 1813, the disappearance of Owen Parfitt, which had already become a popular local legend in the small town, was remembered again when a builder dug up a human skeleton on the street where Owen lived.
