Victims of fear?
There are well-known cases when in African and Indian tribes a sorcerer or shaman casts a curse on a criminal or disobedient, declaring that he will die on a certain day and hour. And, as a rule, death really occurs exactly at the appointed time … Perhaps there is self-hypnosis? That is, people are literally killed by the fear of death?
Sir Leslie Probin, who served as governor of the colony of Sierra Leone at the beginning of the twentieth century, himself watched as one of the natives died a terrible death. This young man was accused of killing his own brother. For this, a local sorcerer brought a skin disease to him. A rash, bleeding ulcers and blisters appeared on the back of the alleged killer, which formed … a portrait of the murdered! As a result, the young man died in terrible agony, and the "drawing" remained on the back of the corpse.
In 1936, several villages in Nigeria were engulfed in a mysterious epidemic. An incomprehensible disease took the lives of girls and girls aged 10-20 years. The local population had no doubt that they all fell victims of the curse. No prayers and sacrifices helped in this.
Ultimately, the inhabitants of the predominantly Muslim villages in the affected villages turned to the heathen magicians from the upper Nile for help. They undertook to point at the sorcerer who had brought a curse on the girls. For this, a ritual ceremony was carried out, which was observed by representatives of the British colonial administration - Dr. P. Robertson and Lieutenant H. Cummings.
The ritual took place in the village where the epidemic first appeared. The visiting magician gathered all the men in the village and ordered them to squat in a circle. A stone was placed in front of each man, and a peg with a chicken tied to it was driven in in the middle of the circle. The magician sprinkled the chicken with the blood of the woman who first died of the alleged curse, then spoke the words of the spell and ordered the chicken to look for the killer. After that, he quickly chopped off the bird's head. The decapitated hen ran in a circle, flapping its wings. But then she ran into one of the stones and fell to the ground … The chicken was dead.

The sorcerer announced that the man sitting by the stone that the chicken stumbled over was the culprit of the epidemic. However, Robertson and Cummings were very skeptical about this statement and forced the magician to repeat the ritual up to ten times. And every time the headless bird pointed to the same person! This could not be a simple coincidence … Moreover, this man was specially transplanted to another place every time.
Either way, the alleged culprit was executed. And the deaths stopped.
Killing hatred
In April 1973, British television aired a documentary about the Seal Hunters from Fossdyke, Lincolnshire.
