The history of one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century - the Bermuda Triangle - began with a chronicle of the events of 1945. On December 5, Flight 19, consisting of five Avenger-class bombers, took off from the US Naval Air Force Base Fort Lauderdale, located on the southern coast of Florida. However, they did not return to the base at the estimated time. According to the recordings of radio communications between the flight commander and the dispatcher of the command post, it turned out that the planes had literally lost their way in the sky over the Atlantic. All of the bombers had their navigation instruments suddenly failed. The last words that reached the base from the crews said that the pilots were "completely disoriented" and "are entering the white water." The incident could be attributed to technical failures or weather events,if, after the Avengers, the Martin Mariner-class seaplane with 13 paratroopers on board, sent in search of bombers, had not also suddenly disappeared.
Since then, it is believed that about 50 large ships and aircraft have become victims of the Bermuda Triangle. Closing the tragic list is the cargo ship Sylvia L. Ossa, which in 1976 never made it to its destination in Philadelphia. At the same time, mystery researchers have found reports of earlier incidents in the waters of the North Atlantic. Among the most famous is the incident with the ships "Rosalie" and "Maria Celeste". They were found in different years of the 19th century completely unharmed, but without a single crew member on board.
The number of versions explaining the essence of what is happening in the devil's triangle exceeds a dozen. At various times, both serious pundits and just adventurers were involved in the investigation. There were hypotheses about abnormal weather events, underwater currents, and even the tricks of aliens. Someone allegedly found at the bottom of the Sargasso Sea, which occupies most of the triangle, an extraordinary pyramid of clearly man-made origin. However, each of the versions revealed only the essence of individual cases and did not fully explain the phenomenon.
Of course, one could assume that completely different causes, independent of each other, lie behind the disasters in this area. But then they must fit into a statistical pattern and be evenly distributed over all air and sea routes of the world. Why is it in this area that mysterious incidents are believed to happen most often?

Russian researcher Boris Ostrovsky, who has been studying the mystery of the triangle for several decades, became interested in the cases of the "Flying Dutchmen" crossing the sea without a crew, as well as ships on which all sailors were found dead, but without signs of violence. It can be said that it was a professional interest. Boris Ostrovsky is a psychiatrist, and his own developments, made back in Soviet times, gave him the clue. He studied the phenomenon of biological precursors - the fact that animals have a presentiment of earthquakes. Ostrovsky wondered why some representatives of the fauna begin to panic long before the first tremors. It turned out that the reason is infrasound - vibrations that are not distinguishable by the human ear, but perfectly perceived by animals. “The human ear perceives frequencies from 16 to 20 thousand hertz. Anything higheris an ultrasound. Below is infrasound,”the scientist explains.
Studies have shown that despite the fact that a person does not hear infrasound, he can still perceive it. Moreover, intense infrasound is very harmful to the body. “If, for example, there are vibrations with a frequency of 7-8 hertz, then they coincide with the alpha rhythm of the human brain,” explains Boris Ostrovsky. - Alpha rhythm, in turn, correlates with mood, state of mind, sleep. Rhythm disturbances lead to a sharp depression of the psyche. Infrasound, acting on the alpha rhythm, causes panic and a feeling of unbearable horror. This fact has been proven in experiments with volunteers. But what does the Bermuda Triangle have to do with it?
According to the data collected by Boris Ostrovsky, up to 50 thousand underwater earthquakes of various strengths occur in the Atlantic every year, and their epicenters are almost always concentrated along the geological fault crossing the Bermuda Triangle. This fact was known before, earthquakes were also tried to be connected with incidents in the waters of the North Atlantic. However, all hypotheses were based on the reasoning that it is the shaking that has a fatal effect on people and makes them jump from the deck or even kills on the spot. Someone got even closer to the solution, suggesting that people, once in the triangle, are exposed to some psychotronic influence of an unknown nature. But research on bioprediction of earthquakes and observation of animals suggested to Ostrovsky that tectonic processes can naturally cause oscillations that generate infrasound. The mechanism of the phenomenon is very simple: an earthquake, as is known, occurs as a result of the accumulation of elastic energy in the earth's crust, leading the latter to rupture. These forces generate infrasonic vibrations: the greater the tension in the geological rocks, the more intense the infrasound. “If you take a ruler and bend it slowly, then at some point it will begin to vibrate and only then it will crack. It is vibration that generates infrasound that cannot be perceived by the human ear,”explains the researcher. The same thing happens in the earth's crust. Moreover, the frequency of infrasound in the waters of the Bermuda Triangle is, according to Ostrovsky, the notorious 7-8 hertz, which is apparently due to the thickness of the earth's crust in this area. However, the fatal role in the processes occurring in the waters of the North Atlantic is played not only by increased seismic activity.

At the initiation of an underwater earthquake, when hundreds of square kilometers of the ocean surface are "shaken", transverse sound waves are transmitted through the water column. Most of them reach the ionosphere. If a ship enters this area, it will receive part of the infrasonic waves on itself. Prolonged exposure to infrasonic vibrations makes a resonator out of the ship, which increases the intensity of sound waves several times and transmits them like dynamics. “People on the ship literally go crazy from this impact and are looking for any way to get rid of the unbearable and inexplicable impact,” the researcher said. No wonder the crews of the Flying Dutchmen completely disappeared - people simply jumped overboard, fleeing from the maddening infrasound.
The same influence of infrasound may also explain the sudden death of the crews of some ships passing through the Bermuda Triangle. “When the oscillations for a number of reasons reached a frequency of 8-12 hertz, they began to affect the internal organs of people,” assures Boris Ostrovsky. Infrasound caused a dangerous resonance in the stomach, heart, lungs and blood vessels. Increased vibrations led to rupture of these organs and sudden death. The researcher faced similar cases when he listened to the stories of eyewitnesses of unexplained deaths during the Gobi-Altai earthquake that broke out on December 4, 1957 in southern Mongolia. Some shepherds fell dead even before the first aftershocks for no apparent reason. "Then I only guessed about the nature of these deaths, but now I am almost sure that the murderous infrasound is to blame," says the researcher.
The harmful effects of infrasound in the Bermuda Triangle are not limited to human exposure. Coming out of the water into the atmosphere, the oscillations are repeatedly reflected from the ionosphere and, picked up by wind flows, form areas of compression and expansion that are significant in length. At the boundaries of different air densities, radio beams, according to Boris Ostrovsky's assumption, can be refracted. Something similar happens to what schoolchildren observe in physics lessons: a spoon dipped into a glass of water does not seem even. She seems to bend. Perhaps this explains the breaks in communication during negotiations between the pilots of the 19th link and the command post, as well as the failure of radio compasses. In turn, infrasound could add disorientation to pilots, which temporarily disturbed the consciousness of experienced pilots. How else to explain their inadequate responses to dispatcher requests and the fact thatthat they could not orient themselves by the sun?

However, if the cases with aircraft crashes can still be explained by the hypothesis of the effect of infrasound, then what about the ships that virtually disappeared without a trace in the Bermuda Triangle? Boris Ostrovsky attributes the blame to the same giant geological fault and tectonic processes. According to his version, at the bottom of the Sargasso Sea, of all areas of the World Ocean, the richest in flora, a huge amount of algae has accumulated over millions of years. They, dying and decomposing, form gases - methane and hydrogen sulfide. Numerous underwater volcanoes at the junction of tectonic plates also add a considerable proportion of gases.
In a normal state, these gases, according to the researcher, are dissolved in the bottom layers of water. But when two factors coincide - a decrease in atmospheric pressure due to a cyclone and an earthquake - what we see when we shake an open bottle of champagne happens. The gases rush to the surface, forming a layer of bubbling liquid. “Even fragments of a light cork sink in it, the specific gravity of which is several times less than champagne,” the researcher explains. The thing is that the near-surface layer of the sea for some time becomes less dense than any vessel with a gigantic displacement. As a result, the ship, like a cork, disappears into the abyss suddenly and without a trace.
According to Boris Ostrovsky, tectonic processes add a number of factors that determine the demonic role of the Bermuda Triangle in the history of world catastrophes. Among them are the strongest magnetic disturbances generated by igneous rocks emanating from the Earth's interior, knocking down the arrows of compasses, and phosphine gas, which causes bright flashes above the water surface. However, it is still unclear how to explain the fact that after 1976 the triangle did not require any more major sacrifices.
Maybe those who argue that the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle does not exist at all are right, and all the facts are far-fetched? But another explanation can be found. For example, that tectonic processes in this place froze for a while. Or that in the 70s of the last century, the Americans began to implement the GPS system, and the navigation systems of ships and aircraft ceased to depend on compasses. In addition, the aircraft and sea vessels themselves have undergone serious technical modernization, have acquired the latest insulating materials between the hull and the skin and no longer amplify infrasound, and their designs do not allow them to just drown in "white water".
Of course, if the devil's triangle brings another surprise, then all these explanations will go down the drain. But Ostrovsky's new theory will either receive confirmation or be deemed untenable. Like all the old ones.
