This story was sent to the American explorer of mysterious creatures Lon Strickler. Its author is an elderly man named John who lives in the north of Nevada.

“When I was a child, my mother, I, and my grandfather lived in a private home in the wooded area of southwest Pennsylvania. My grandfather was a jack of all trades, and there was even a small smithy in his barn. My grandmother died before I was born, and my father was a soldier and died during the Second World War (Paranormal News - paranormal-news.ru).

It was the summer of 1946, when from the forest surrounding our house we began to hear strange howling sounds. It was especially loud at night and I was very scared, because they were heard very close to our house.

My mother was also scared, but my grandfather was not afraid of the sounds. This went on all year, but when in the fall and winter my grandfather and I began to go to the forest to hunt deer and squirrels, we did not notice anything suspicious there.

The spring of 1947 came, when I was helping my grandfather in his barn, and at that moment, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed how something large was moving along the edge of the forest towards the wasteland where my grandfather kept several old cars and other old things.

I told my grandfather about the creature I had seen and he went to the door, looked in that direction, smoking a pipe, but said nothing. After a couple of minutes, he returned to work, otherwise the creature went back into the forest.

I cannot judge the details of its appearance, but from a distance it was like a big ape. It reminded me of a monkey on the cover of a magazine about primates living in the Asian jungle.

Later that evening, I told my mother about what I saw and she was shocked, knowing that I was not making it up, I never lied to her. Moreover, the howling sounds from the forest have not disappeared anywhere. And when I told her that my grandfather had also seen this creature, my mother went to my grandfather's room and talked to him.

She asked him what exactly he saw, but the grandfather shook his head and said that he hoped that we ourselves would never encounter this creature, because his sight would scare us very much and then we would want to leave here.

When my mother and I assured him that we would never leave him here alone in the house, my grandfather finally told us that the locals call this creature "Dark Walker", and the Indians of these lands gave him the nickname "Stone Spirit" and in their opinion this is a very evil creature and when it appears, then one of the people in these places will die.

According to my grandfather, the last time he saw this creature was the night before my grandmother died. My mother said to this that she did not believe in the harbingers of death, but she felt that something supernatural was living next to us.

The eerie howl continued every night, although we did not see any more signs of the Dark Walker. But one dark evening we were sitting on the porch of the house and listening to the radio and this howl was heard in the forest. Everything seemed to be as usual, but my grandfather suddenly got up and looked in the direction of his barn, and then he said to me “John, quickly bring me my pistol and ammunition”.

I ran into the house and took his old revolver and some cartridges for it, and then handed them to my grandfather and watched as he silently and quickly loaded the cartridges into the revolver. Then he took an ax and tucked it into his belt, and he told us to immediately run into the house.

Through the window in the kitchen, my mother and I saw grandfather slowly walking towards the barn and hiding behind it. After a minute or so, shots rang out, one, two, three, and then there was a blood-curdling cry from the other side. But it did not last long and there was complete silence.

We stood near the window and did not know what to do, go there or continue to wait for grandfather? But then, from behind the barn, my grandfather shouted "Stay in the house until I return!"

I heard my grandfather start the engine of his pickup, and then I saw him drive onto the road. In the back of the pickup there was something large and covered with a tarp. We wanted to wait for my grandfather to return, but it was already deep night and my mother told me to go to bed.

The next morning, when I went downstairs to the kitchen, I saw my grandfather sitting at the table and reading the newspaper over a cup of coffee. The mother sat nearby and silently looked at the grandfather. Finally, she could not resist: “Dad, tell him,” she said.

Grandpa put down his newspaper and turned to me: “I killed the Dark Walker,” he told me and nothing more. And later my mother told me to be silent and never tell anyone about it.

Both my mother and my grandfather never spoke about this creature again. My grandfather lived another 15 years and my mother lived in his house until his death. When I grew up, I left there and I got my own family. But every summer I come to those places and I never hear howling again."

Later, Lon Strickler contacted John and asked him about what the creature looked like, whether it looked like a yeti or had something of a human in it.

John said that he looked more animal than human, and he moved with a crouch. John also said that the local Shawnee Indians talked about such creatures in their legends, although he could not find anything about his nickname "Stone Spirit".
